How to Export a WhatsApp Chat for Site4Us

Export a WhatsApp chat without media, check that its text format is supported, review the calculated statistics and replace existing results safely.

The short answer

Follow the current Site4Us dashboard guidance: open the intended chat, tap the contact name, choose Export Chat, then Without Media. If the export arrives as a ZIP, extract it and select the .txt file inside. Site4Us currently recognises slash-separated day/month dates with 24-hour times. Analyse the text, confirm both participants in the export itself, and save only if the preview is correct. If an existing result is visible and its replacement should stay hidden, turn off Show on my live site before choosing Re-analyse.

Site4Us can calculate optional relationship statistics from a WhatsApp text export. The safe workflow is to export the intended chat, check that its headers match the supported format, analyse it, and save only when the preview is plausible.

This feature is optional. Leave it out if the chat is too private, the export format is unsupported, or the results look wrong. A love-story website can still use selected captions, photos and short videos without WhatsApp statistics.

If you are still planning the overall gift, start with the digital anniversary gift guide. You can also look through Site4Us examples before deciding whether message statistics add anything useful.

Before exporting the chat

Prepare deliberately:

  • choose the conversation you actually want to analyse
  • check the names of both participants inside the chat
  • decide whether calculated sender statistics are appropriate for the gift
  • use a device and storage location you control
  • plan to choose Without media, because Site4Us expects text for this step
  • if replacing saved statistics, check whether Show on my live site is currently on

The Site4Us preview shows a Top Sender field. It does not list both participants as a pair. Confirm both people by opening the exported text and checking the sender labels there.

Start with the current Site4Us export guidance

The current Site4Us dashboard shows this sequence:

  1. Open the intended chat in WhatsApp.
  2. Tap the contact name.
  3. Choose Export Chat.
  4. Choose Without Media.
  5. Share the .txt file to yourself, then upload it to Site4Us from a private location you control.

This is the dashboard’s current device-neutral wording, not a newly verified Android or iPhone route. WhatsApp can change its controls. If your phone’s labels differ, use the current in-app options or WhatsApp support rather than guessing or repeatedly altering the exported file.

Do not send the export to your partner if the website is intended to be a surprise.

If the export arrives as a ZIP file

A ZIP is an archive containing other files. Site4Us needs the text file inside, not the archive renamed to end in .txt.

On an iPhone or iPad, Apple says: “Tap the ZIP file or archive. A folder is created containing the files.” See Apple’s Files instructions.

Then:

  1. Open the newly created folder.
  2. Find the WhatsApp .txt export inside.
  3. Select that .txt file in Site4Us, or open it and paste its text.

Changing the filename from .zip to .txt does not uncompress the archive and will not turn it into a valid WhatsApp text export.

Check the text format before analysing

Keep the original export unchanged while you inspect it. The current Site4Us parser recognises two header shapes:

  • bracketed header: [14/09/2026, 21:05] Alex: Message
  • dash-separated header: 14/09/2026, 21:05 - Alex: Message

The important current limitations are:

  • dates use slash-separated day/month/year
  • times use a 24-hour clock
  • seconds may be present, but are not required
  • AM/PM headers are not supported by the current parser and can fail
  • month/day exports can be read as day/month, producing a plausible-looking but incorrect date

Do not repeatedly edit dates, times or sender labels in the original file to force a result. Keep the untouched export as your reference. If the format is unsupported, contact Site4Us support or omit this optional step.

Analyse the export in Site4Us

In the dashboard, open WhatsApp Analytics. You can paste the text into the box or choose Upload .txt file.

Select Analyse. When recognised messages are present, the preview can show:

  • Total Messages
  • Most Active Day
  • Most Active Hour
  • Top Sender
  • Top Emoji
  • First Message

First Message means the earliest date recognised in this export. It is not proof of the first message ever exchanged in the WhatsApp conversation. If the file does not contain the complete conversation, or a month/day header is interpreted incorrectly, the displayed date can be wrong.

Check the preview before saving

Compare the preview with the exported text:

  • Is Top Sender a sender label that appears in the file?
  • Do both intended participants appear in the exported text?
  • Is First Message a plausible earliest recognised date for this export?
  • Do the total, day, hour and emoji results look possible?
  • Did you accidentally export a group or another conversation?

Do not save incorrect results. Re-exporting may help if the wrong chat or wrong file was selected, but it is not a guaranteed fix for an unsupported header format. If the second untouched export has the same unsupported format, contact support or continue without WhatsApp statistics.

Understand what saving sends

The exported text is analysed in the browser. The current implementation does not save a conversation transcript.

When you choose Save to my site, Site4Us sends calculated statistics for storage. These include the top sender, most active hour and day, total message count, top emoji and count, earliest recognised message date, plus grouped counts such as per-sender, per-hour, per-day and per-emoji values.

Because sender labels and per-sender counts are included, describe these as calculated statistics, not anonymous aggregates. Save them only if that is appropriate for your story.

Replace existing statistics safely

Re-analysis replaces the existing statistics when you save the new result, but it does not reset whether the section is already visible.

If an existing result is shown on the live story and the replacement should stay hidden:

  1. Switch off Show on my live site.
  2. Select Re-analyse.
  3. Add and analyse the new text.
  4. Check the preview carefully.
  5. Save only when it is correct.
  6. Turn visibility back on later, when you are ready.

If you select Re-analyse first, the current screen no longer shows the visibility switch during that replacement flow. Set the visibility choice before starting.

WhatsApp says: “When the setting is on, you can block others from exporting chats.” Read its Advanced Chat Privacy explanation. Do not attempt to bypass that setting.

Final checklist

Before saving, confirm:

  • the intended chat was exported
  • Without media was selected
  • any ZIP was extracted and the contained .txt file chosen
  • both participant labels appear in the exported text
  • headers use a supported slash day/month and 24-hour shape
  • First Message is treated as the earliest recognised export date
  • every preview result is plausible
  • the visibility switch was turned off before Re-analyse if needed
  • you understand that saved statistics include sender labels and per-sender counts

If any of those checks fail, do not save. Keeping this optional section out is better than publishing incorrect or unexpectedly visible statistics.

Frequently asked questions.

Why should I choose Without media, and what if I receive a ZIP?

Site4Us analyses the exported text rather than chat photos or videos. Choose Without media. If your device gives you a ZIP archive, extract or uncompress it first, open the resulting folder and select the .txt file inside. Renaming a ZIP file does not extract its contents.

Which WhatsApp text format does Site4Us currently recognise?

The current parser recognises slash-separated day/month dates with 24-hour times in supported iOS-style or Android-style headers. AM/PM headers can fail, while month/day dates can be read as the wrong date. Do not save results with an implausible First Message date.

Does Site4Us save my complete WhatsApp conversation?

No conversation transcript is saved by the current implementation. The text is analysed in the browser; saving sends calculated statistics, including sender labels and per-sender counts. Those statistics are not anonymous, so review the choice before saving.

How do I replace existing statistics without showing them immediately?

If the existing statistics are visible and the replacement should stay hidden, switch off Show on my live site before selecting Re-analyse. Saving replacement statistics does not reset the existing visibility choice.
